This chapter focuses on ancient political reflections on federalism. In the light of the sources and of the critical debate, it aims at verifying the extent to which Greek political thought, albeit showing modest interest in the federal experience, perceived federal states as political structures of cooperation, and therefore integration, alternative to the polis and to its policy of self-affirmation and exclusion.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on ancient political reflections on federalism. In the light of the sources and of the critical debate, it aims at verifying the extent to which Greek political thought, albeit showing modest interest in the federal experience, perceived federal states as political structures of cooperation, and therefore integration, alternative to the polis and to its policy of self-affirmation and exclusion.
