The aim of this Introduction to the Italian edition of Eric Voegelin's 'Order and History' is to clarify the title and the purposes of the entire work. This requires to consider its laboring genesis, its theoretical frame, and the causes of its deferred reception. In polemical and constructive dialogue with outstanding intellectuals as Weber, Husserl and Toynbee, Voegelin came to focus some typical limits of contemporary anthropology, such as emotivism, the epistemic restrictions of the transcendental-ego, many forms of relativism due to an historicist approach of ancient and modern civilizations. In opposition to this he tried to develop a structural analysis of social order according to its historical typologies, and to gain a meaning of political theory as a study of the rational order of existence.
