It discusses the relations between economic theory and the analysis of economic institutions. The paper led to a lively exchange of views, which are also published at the end of the chapter. Main article also reprinted in: Competing Economic Theories – Essays in memory of Giovanni Caravale, London and New York: Routledge,2002, pp.331-339.
