Apologies are analysed from a pragmatic and argumentative perspective, highlighting their directive component as requests of forgiveness, which must be appropriately argued in order to move the addressee's assent. English apologies are compared with apologies in Russian language, particularly interesting for their overtly signaled directiveness and for the linguistic distinctions they impose according to the different perception of guilt.

Abstract

Apologies are analysed from a pragmatic and argumentative perspective, highlighting their directive component as requests of forgiveness, which must be appropriately argued in order to move the addressee's assent. English apologies are compared with apologies in Russian language, particularly interesting for their overtly signaled directiveness and for the linguistic distinctions they impose according to the different perception of guilt.
