In the paper we introduce the category of "core generation" defined as the population from 20 to 39 years old. Our main results are the following. We show that the “core generation” exhibits path dependence and it is the driver of economic development. The reason is that it is that the “core generation” can plan longer into the future, while being the bridge between the younger and the oldest generations. We provide a detailed analysis of the turning points of the core generation – from positive increase to negative decrease - for the main countries in the world over the period 1950-2050.

Abstract
In the paper we introduce the category of "core generation" defined as the population from 20 to 39 years old. Our main results are the following. We show that the “core generation” exhibits path dependence and it is the driver of economic development. The reason is that it is that the “core generation” can plan longer into the future, while being the bridge between the younger and the oldest generations. We provide a detailed analysis of the turning points of the core generation – from positive increase to negative decrease - for the main countries in the world over the period 1950-2050.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
