This paper presents the steps taken in the construction of three parallel versions of Test Your English (TYE), a multimedia test of communicative language ability created at the English Institute of the Università degli Studi di Milano in collabora-tion with the Mediateca, the results obtained from the volunteers who have taken it so far and the prospects that have opened up since the project started in 1997. The test is part of a range of initiatives, including self-study itineraries and questionnaires regarding needs analysis and learning expectations.
