Guala da Bergamo e la curia romana, 1221-1230. Relazioni, incarichi e problemi di definizione

The activity of Guala from Bergamo, a Dominican friar Preacher, then bishop of Brescia, is based on his tight relations with the Apostolic Holy See. This contribution takes in consideration the historical sources, in particular those in relation to his diplomatic missions, starting from the first testimonies up to his election as bishop of Brescia. More in detail, on the one hand the contribution tries clarify the career of Guala at the Curia, and in particular his contacts which enabled him to earn the necessary confidence to cover his delicate commitments, which starting above all from 1226, would have made of him a protagonist of the papal politics at the court of Frederick II and in Northern Italy; on the other hand, the contribution tries also to inquire into the effective nature of these missions under the juridical profile, according to that clarification (today more and more definite) of the functions and powers of the papal emissaries.
