The history of Polybius'reception in antiquity is not unique because of his manyfold personality: Polybius as a constitutionalist was highly appreciated by Cicero, but as an historian was preferred only by Livius in front of the Roman 'annalistic' tradition; furthermore there is Polybius the tactician and Polybius the specialist in chronology: this last enjoyed a large reception in Christian chronography, while a second Polybius, freedman of emperor Claudius, never existed: he is a mere creation of Jacoby's phantasy.
