The essay focuses upon the Holy See’s concordatiarian policy after the Ecumenical Council Vatican II. Firstly, the difficulties that have characterised the approval of the Council’s Declaration on religious freedom are examined. In this context, the debate that took place in the context of the Council as regards the Holy See’s concordatarian policy is dealt with. The essay then analyses the theses that emerged in the aftermath of the Council, and in particular the opposition to the Council’s Declaration on religious freedom and the position according to which the age of Concordats had been relegated to the realm of history. Finally, it examines the Council’s statements and the difficulties they met in the process of implementation through the Concordats.
