The book makes a contribution to the inventory/recension of the Papiers Granvelle, the vast body of correspondence of the Habsburg Minister Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle. It offers a critical edition of a selection of as yet mostly unpublished italian documents drawn from the Trumbull Manuscripts collection preserved in the Bibliothèque Municipale in Besançon, France. These documents (August 1551-Febrary 1552) are a hundred and fourty nine letters exchanged between Granvelle, then at the imperial court, and fifty five Italian-speaking correspondents disseminated across Europe, operating at the emperor’s service as agents and informers. The corpus is provided with a physical, linguistic, historical and rhetorical description.
