Venezia e lo"Stado de Terraferma".Il governo delle comunità nel territorio bergamasco( secc- XV-XVIII)

The book reconstructs the relationships between Venice and the Mainland from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries through the study of a case, the territory of Bergamo. Inside an institutional framework rather unchanged in time – the administrative and jurisdictional autonomy granted at the moment of the conquest – the interventions of the Republic on the local forms of organization of power came into existence. Over the centuries, they modified the relationships between urban centre and territory , inherited from the regional state of Veneto after the previous ages of city-republics and signories: they concerned the legal status of the citizens (cives) in the fifteenth century country, the execution of a general assessment for tax allocation in the sixteenth century, the consolidation of rural representative bodies in the seventeenth century and finally, between the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries, the criteria of taxation and representation within the local communities. Therefore, this study makes it possible to reconsider also the idea of a Venetian “decline” at the end of the old regime.
