Tre giorni, due notti: filantropia Rosa-Croce nel "Meister" di Goethe

During his years of pilgrimage Wilhelm Meister is subjected to a curious law: He cannot spend more than three days under the same roof. This precaution is taken to prevent the members of the association he belongs to – the Tower Society – from succumbing to sedentariness. Such a law is prescribed in the Gründliche Relation (detailed relation), published in the 1618 edition of the Fama Fraternitatis by Johann Valentin Andreae, where a Rosicrucian brother cannot spend more than two successive nights in the same place, in order not to be noticed. Wilhelm is bound to his Rosicrucian brother by subtle ties. Both belong to a secret society which hardly reveals its own existence and remains quiet about its noble purposes. To join it, it is necessary to endure a long trial period. Both secret societies have precise rules. The Rosicrucians practise medicine. Wilhelm becomes a doctor. These and many other similarities make it possible to claim that Goethe’s novel was inspired by a Rosicrucian source.

Durante gli anni del suo pellegrinare Wilhelm Meister deve sottostare ad una norma alquanto bizzarra; non può rimanere più di tre giorni sotto uno stesso tetto. La precauzione è adoperata per evitare la tendenza alla sedentarietà dei membri della associazione cui egli appartiene, la Società della Torre. Una norma simile è prescritta nella Gründliche Relation, relazione dettagliata, pubblicata nella edizione del 1618 della Fama Fraternitatis di Johann Valentin Andreae, dove ad un fratello Rosa-Croce non è consentito di rimanere in alcun luogo più di due notti consecutive, per non essere notato dalla gente. Sottili legami collegano Wilhelm al Fratello Rosa-Croce. Ambedue i protagonisti appartengono ad una società segreta, che divulga a mala pena la propria esistenza e sottace i suoi nobili scopi. Per entrare a farne parte si deve sostenere un lungo periodo di prova. Le due società segrete hanno delle regole, i Rosa-Croce praticano la medicina. Wilhelm diviene medico. Grazie a queste e ad altre numerose somiglianze è possibile sostenere per il romanzo di Goethe una ispirazione rosacruciana.
