This essay deals with Giuseppe Billanovich's studies about the biography of Teofilo Folengo (1491-1544) between the 30es and the 40es of 20th century. Billanovich's archival scholarship was able to demolish the biographical legend supported by Francesco De Sanctis's Storia della letteratura italiana and offered a new and reliable image of the extraordinary poet monk, inventor of the most sophisticated version of macaronic poetry, which would have later spread all across Europe.
