Tra padri e figli: quale mobilità sociale

The paper focuses on the contribution of high level education to intergenerational social mobility estimating the persistence of inequality of chance, due to ascribed status more than to achived one. More than 75% of graduates interviewed experimented an increasing educational mobility in comparison with their parents, therefore attending academic studies works – from a cultural point of view - as a social lift for a very high number of young people; this dynamic has really reduced, during last decades, the ascribed transmission of educational status, even if the latter remain still prevalent observing the highest professional status.

Il contributo analizza le origini sociali di chi accede all'università e alla laurea mettendo a confronto il titolo di studio e la professione dei genitori con quella dei figli. Ne risulta che oltre il 75% dei laureati intervistati ha sperimentato una mobilità ascendente rispetto all'istruzione dei genitori e che dunque l'università funziona come ascensore sociale per un numero significativo di giovani; questa dinamica ha ridotto nel tempo la trasmissione ereditaria degli status socio-economici anche se questa dinamica resta tuttora prevalente
