Abstract

The Ambrosiana Library and its place in the History of Classical Scholarship. Angelo Mai. Why printed catalogues of manuscripts are mainly works of external scholars. Looking among the papers of Frederick Borromeo for information on his knowledge of Latin and Greek. He studied a few Greek (in neo-hellenic pronunciation) and was unable to understand Greek texts without a Latin translation. Neverthless he is capable of interesting remarks about stylistic affinities between Homer and the Bible and wise opinions on textual critic. Ancient authors fed his passion for occultism, as the vision of ecstatic nuns. The curious meeting with one of them, surnamed by him with a rare and refined Graecism.
