Il diavolo non è poi così brutto? Il primo semestre della presidenza Zuma in Sudafrica

Six months after the elections in South Africa, and six months before the kick-off of the Fifa World Cup in Johannesburg on the 11th of June 2010, it is time to make an assessment of the measures taken up by the new president Jacob Zuma. The first moves of Zuma can be read against two important issues that mark South Africa’s transition towards a post-apartheid society. On the one side, the Zuma presidency is seen as key test in the winding up of the consolidation of mature democracy in the country. On the other hand, the new president is confronted with many challenges concerning internal and foreign policy dossiers. The international observers are looking with an interested eye on both aspects. The first months in power suggest that the international community could be learning to appreciate Zuma and his pragmatism.
