Starting from the reflections of some contemporary sociologists who have attempted to conceptualise family life and capture the multidimensionality of relations in contrast to the individualisation argument, this chapter presents the family as a social relation, neither replaceable nor to be confused with any other, based on full reciprocity between the sexes and the generations. The family’s development and dynamics can be fully grasped with reference to the morphogenetic theory, to help understand the social differentiation processes active in contemporary societies.

Abstract

Starting from the reflections of some contemporary sociologists who have attempted to conceptualise family life and capture the multidimensionality of relations in contrast to the individualisation argument, this chapter presents the family as a social relation, neither replaceable nor to be confused with any other, based on full reciprocity between the sexes and the generations. The family’s development and dynamics can be fully grasped with reference to the morphogenetic theory, to help understand the social differentiation processes active in contemporary societies.
