This introduction examines how digital labour platforms reshape gender and intersectional inequalities across the Global North and Global South. Drawing on the volume’s 12 country case studies, it shows how platform work can expand access to paid employment while reproducing occupational segregation, low pay, precarious conditions and unequal care responsibilities. Particular attention is given to domestic and care work, where platform business models, algorithmic management and national regulatory frameworks shape workers’ autonomy, safety and access to social protection. The introduction argues that platforms often deepen existing hierarchies of gender, migration status, race and class, while their varied forms of intermediation call for context-specific analysis and regulation.

Abstract
This introduction examines how digital labour platforms reshape gender and intersectional inequalities across the Global North and Global South. Drawing on the volume’s 12 country case studies, it shows how platform work can expand access to paid employment while reproducing occupational segregation, low pay, precarious conditions and unequal care responsibilities. Particular attention is given to domestic and care work, where platform business models, algorithmic management and national regulatory frameworks shape workers’ autonomy, safety and access to social protection. The introduction argues that platforms often deepen existing hierarchies of gender, migration status, race and class, while their varied forms of intermediation call for context-specific analysis and regulation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
