Over the last few decades, part of the sociological literature on poverty has contributed to developing a counter-narrative that recognizes poor people as active agents capable of exercising agency, expressed both through everyday practices of survival and through forms of resistance and strategic action. At the same time, studies of political behaviour have highlighted a growing crisis of political participation, particularly in its traditional forms of democratic expression. Within this context, people experiencing poverty face a double form of exclusion, both economic and political, which limits their opportunities to participate in and influence decision-making processes. Drawing on a review of the literature on the factors that hinder political participation among people experiencing poverty, as well as those that can foster the organization of agency and the expression of voice, this thesis investigates the conditions that make it possible to move from individual forms of resistance to collective political action. In particular, it explores the factors that lead people experiencing poverty to organize politically and the demands around which their claims are articulated. The analysis draws on ethnographic research on movements advocating for employment and income rights, in which poverty becomes a space for recognition, subject formation and collective mobilization. It also engages in a critical reflection on the relationship between knowledge and power in research, examining how to represent the agency of marginalized people without speaking on their behalf or reducing it to analytical categories that are distant from their lived experiences. The aim is to contribute to an understanding of poverty as a collective and systemic issue, highlighting the political potential of grassroots organizing practices and claims.
