The paper focuses on the rhetorical strategies adopted by Statius, in his Silvae, when addressing elements of his patrons’ biography that could not be easily portrayed in a positive light. The complementary models of Pindar and Ovid (esp. his exile poetry) provide different ways to describe misfortunes as potential achievements; Statius, accordingly, combines these two literary models to give a fully positive encomium of his laudandi.
