The article examines the transformation of the cult of Saint Benedict of Pa- lermo in Venezuela, interpreting it as a process of cultural translation within the colonial context. Introduced by the Franciscans as an instru- ment of evangelization, the saint was appropriated and re-signified by Afro-descendant communities, which turned him into a reference point for identity, social cohesion, and cultural resistance. His cult, still alive to- day, demonstrates the persistence of forms of religiosity that articulate African, European, and American elements.

Abstract
The article examines the transformation of the cult of Saint Benedict of Pa- lermo in Venezuela, interpreting it as a process of cultural translation within the colonial context. Introduced by the Franciscans as an instru- ment of evangelization, the saint was appropriated and re-signified by Afro-descendant communities, which turned him into a reference point for identity, social cohesion, and cultural resistance. His cult, still alive to- day, demonstrates the persistence of forms of religiosity that articulate African, European, and American elements.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
