Alongside the leading female protagonists, there has always been a mosaic of figures who held political offices in informal spaces4, who played a decisive role in diplomatic negotiations that do not emerge from official sources, but who were there and decisive in the development of court politics, even if they played a marginal role. The aim of these pages is to focus on a figure such as the Marquise de Maintenon, born Françoise d’Aubigné, who perfectly embodies this model. She was very close to Louis XIV, even becoming his morganatic wife, but precisely because of this she could only carry out unofficial, informal tasks, even managing the court rooms from a marginal position. However, Madame de Maintenon’s marginalisation was only apparent, as she actually played a major political role alongside Louis XIV, albeit reflexively. In fact, despite her great political acumen, which is acknowledged by many contemporary witnesses, her ‘real’ power derived essentially from the King’s favour.

Abstract
In fact, despite her great political acumen, which is acknowledged by many contemporary witnesses, her ‘real’ power derived essentially from the King’s favour.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
