Abstract
Cardinal Ugo of Ostia, later Gregory IX, played a leading role in shaping the new form of religious life of the mendicant orders. Once elected pope, he accelerated the production of letters in support of the Friars Preachers and the Friars Minor; this acceleration went hand in hand with a process of gradual clericalization of the Friars Minor, who were redefined in the image of the Friars Preachers, into a model better suited to the needs of the Curia and its agenda of urgent matters. The subsequent canonizations of Francis (1228) and, above all, of Dominic (1234)—with the latter assuming an exemplary role similar to that of the Assisian for the Friars Minor—constituted a further step in this game of mirrors. All of this resulted in the organization of governance and relations—internal, with the Apostolic See, and with the diocesan bishops—as well as the institutional style that we commonly refer to as the “mendicant orders.” Historiography has often emphasized the novelty of this form of religio. Upon closer examination, however, one can identify elements of continuity that are no less significant: in particular, the new model highlights decisive constants in relation to an already existing ordo—a form of Christian life—namely, that of the canons regularI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
