Gli insegnanti alle prese con il proprio ruolo nella società

The social prestige perceived by teachers shows a steady downward trend, which has persisted over the long term. The outlook for the next 10 years is slightly less pessimistic but still worse than in the past; teachers who are not yet on a permanent contract and those in the South are less pessimistic. The ideal image of the teacher has also changed profoundly: whilst in 1999 the sample was divided between ‘the professional’ (40 per cent) and ‘the important social role’ (40 per cent), today 58 per cent wish to fulfil a social role and only 28 per cent focus on professionalism; this view is confirmed by the higher level of job satisfaction among those who prioritise the social function. There is also an increase in the number of those who consider all professional qualities relating to listening to and communicating with pupils to be ‘very important’.

Il prestigio sociale percepito dagli insegnanti mostra una tendenza stabile al ribasso, continuativa sul lungo periodo. La previsione per i prossimi 10 anni risulta un po’ meno pessimista ma pur sempre deteriorata rispetto al passato; sono meno pessimisti i docenti non ancora in ruolo e gli insegnanti del Sud. Anche l’immagine ideale dell’insegnante è profondamente cambiata: se nel 1999 il campione si divideva tra “il professionista” (40%) e “l’importante funzione sociale” (40%), oggi è il 58% a voler svolgere un ruolo sociale e solo il 28% punta al professionismo; questa rappresentazione viene confermata dal più alto grado di soddisfazione lavorativa dei sostenitori della funzione sociale. Aumentano anche coloro che ritengono “molto importanti” tutte le qualità professionali di ascolto e comunicazione con gli studenti.
