This chapter presents an excerpt from the extremely rare first edition of the Trattato delle piante e imagini de i sacri edifici di Terra Santa, published in Rome in 1609 by Bernardino Amico, O.F.M., following his years of service in the Custody of the Holy Land from 1595 to 1598/99. Amico’s words bear witness to the sharp decline in the popularity of pilgrimage religionis causa from the Counter-Reformation period onward.
