Literary texts, even those of a hagiographic or historiographical nature, for civil or religious propaganda purposes, in some cases tend to distort events. From the early Middle Ages, including Gregory the Great and Paul the Deacon, narratives sometimes include chronological alterations, actualizations, novelistic digressions, or selective omissions. In some cases, genuine forgeries have been produced, often used as authentic by later authors, as demonstrated by the sources used by Alessandro Manzoni for his tragedy Adelchi.

Abstract

Literary texts, even those of a hagiographic or historiographical nature, for civil or religious propaganda purposes, in some cases tend to distort events. From the early Middle Ages, including Gregory the Great and Paul the Deacon, narratives sometimes include chronological alterations, actualizations, novelistic digressions, or selective omissions. In some cases, genuine forgeries have been produced, often used as authentic by later authors, as demonstrated by the sources used by Alessandro Manzoni for his tragedy Adelchi.
