Armida Barelli (Milan, 1882 – Marzio, 1952) was a leading figure in the Italian Catholic movement. Her work was vast and varied; she was the founder and principal driving force behind various Church organisations of the time, foremost among them the Gioventù Femminile Cattolica Italiana (later Gioventù Femminile di Azione Cattolica), which she presided over from 1918 to 1946, and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, where she served as treasurer from its inception until 1952. Although several studies have focused on Armida Barelli, a reconstruction was lacking that, through the heuristic lens of the history of education, would re-examine the specifically formative contribution she made to the promotion of women’s social role and the development of the Catholic University. To fill this gap, this research began with a review of the most relevant specialist literature: in addition to Armida Barelli’s biographies and the memoirs she wrote, various studies on the Catholic movement were analysed, particularly those dedicated to the Catholic University and women’s issues. Printed and archival sources were analysed, including documentary resources not yet considered in historiography. This thesis reconstructs Armida Barelli’s specific educational contribution and, in particular: it sheds light on her formative story to understand how it influenced her educational reflections and commitment; it examines the defining features of her educational work, particularly through the initiatives of the Gioventù Femminile and the Catholic University (with a focus on the Marianum women’s university college, too); it outlines the profile of the Catholic woman as it was defined by Barelli’s educational idea.
