This essay examines a previously unpublished late sixteenth-century source concerning the waterways of the Vicenza region. By analyzing this document within the broader administrative and environmental framework of the Venetian Republic, the article sheds light on the strategies adopted for the management, regulation, and preservation of hydraulic resources. The source offers valuable evidence of the Republic’s efforts to balance agricultural development, water control, and the prevention of environmental risks, revealing the central role of waterways in territorial planning. Through this case study, the essay contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between governance, landscape management, and environmental protection in early modern Venice, highlighting the long-term significance of hydraulic policies in shaping both the natural and human environment.
