Il contributo della Società del Giardino all’epopea risorgimentale, in Società del Giardino

The studies that have so far been interested in reconstructing the history of the Società del Giardino have only marginally investigated its contribution to the Risorgimento process. The impression, scrolling through those pages, is that the circle wanted to maintain a detached attitude towards the insurrections and political upheavals that affected the 19th century. This essay aims to fill this gap, highlighting the role, in some ways very important, played in the epic of the Italian Risorgimento. Through the study of company documents and thanks to the retrieval of external sources, including the periodical press of that time, it has been possible to reconstruct the material and economic contribution given to the patriotic front, as well as the participation of many members. Finally, it will be emphasised how the Società del Giardino contributed to the creation of the new liberal elite that guided the city of Milan, and the Kingdom of Italy, in the decades following Unification.
