This chapter offers a review of the psychological literature on male economic inactivity, with a specific focus on studies relating to the middle-aged group (40–55 years). It is indeed interesting to examine how the psychological literature has framed the issue: forexample, whether it has addressed it primarily from an individual perspective or whether it has investigated it whilst also taking into account the context and the network of relationships in which people are embedded. The analysis was conducted using the main psychological databases (Psycinfo, Psycarticles, Psychology Database). The analysis of the identified contributions reveals three main areas of focus: a) the link between economic inactivity and psychophysical health; b) factors related to re-entry into the labour market; c) the links between economic inactivity and socio-relational and identity dynamics.
