ARCHEOLOGIA IN PROVINCIA DI VARESE: NUOVA LUCE SU SCAVI INEDITI PER LA RICOSTRUZIONE DELL'ASSETTO TERRITORIALE IN ETA' TARDOANTICA-ALTOMEDIEVALE

This research aimed to investigate the dynamics that affected the territory corresponding to the modern Province of Varese between the Late Antique and Early Medieval periods, through the selection of archaeological excavation contexts—largely unpublished—that yielded significant evidence for the period under study. Through a re-examination of the available excavation data and a study of the material culture associated with the stratigraphic sequences, it was possible to shed new light on several case studies. Considered within a broader framework, these contexts have enabled a reassessment of the various categories of evidence attested across the area and their integration into a coherent interpretative model, with the aim of understanding their interrelationships and the picture they collectively provide of the territory.

La ricerca ha avuto come obiettivo un’analisi delle dinamiche che hanno interessato il territorio corrispondente alla provincia di Varese tra età tardoantica e altomedievale, andando a selezionare contesti di scavo archeologico, perlopiù inediti, che avessero restituito testimonianze significative per il periodo in esame. Dalla rilettura dei dati di scavo disponibili e dallo studio dei materiali associati alle stratificazioni, è stato possibile dare nuova attenzione ad alcuni casi che hanno permesso, collocati in un contesto più ampio, di rileggere le testimonianze di diverso genere attestate nell’area e di riunirle per comprendere in che modo si relazionino tra di loro e quale immagine possano restituire del territorio.
