This volume examines the figure of Anna Rosa Gattorno within the context of nineteenth-century female social Catholicism in Italy, reconstructing her human, spiritual, and institutional journey through a historical and historiographical perspective. The work situates the experience of the founder of the Daughters of Saint Anne within the profound political, social, and religious transformations that accompanied the transition from the Restoration era to the formation of the Italian nation-state. Through the analysis of the Genoese context, the Gattorno family, female Catholic education, and new forms of religious assistance, the book demonstrates how her personal experience intersected with the emergence of a new form of Catholic female protagonism capable of exerting a concrete influence on contemporary society. Particular attention is devoted to the transformation of private suffering into a collective project of organized charity. Early widowhood, the illness of her daughter, economic hardship, and the loss of her children are interpreted not merely as biographical experiences, but as decisive elements in the spiritual maturation of Anna Rosa Gattorno and in the development of her charitable vocation. The volume highlights how the founder progressively transformed domestic motherhood into a form of “social motherhood” directed toward the poor, the sick, abandoned women, and vulnerable children. The book also reconstructs the foundation of the Daughters of Saint Anne in 1866 and the rapid expansion of the congregation in Italy and abroad, interpreting it as part of the broader growth of active female religious congregations during the nineteenth century. The sisters are presented as protagonists of a new form of Catholic presence within modern society, engaged in popular education, healthcare, orphan care, and international missions. Through the analysis of charitable institutions, assistance networks, and relations with both the Holy See and the liberal state, the study demonstrates how nineteenth-century female Catholicism played a fundamental role in the development of confessional welfare systems and social solidarity. A substantial section of the work is also devoted to the spirituality of Anna Rosa Gattorno, centred on Divine Providence, active charity, and the union of contemplation and social action. The study addresses themes such as female mysticism, spiritual direction, Eucharistic devotion, Franciscan influence, and the religious meaning of suffering within nineteenth-century Catholicism, interpreting these elements not apologetically but as historical expressions of the religious culture of the period. Ultimately, the volume presents Anna Rosa Gattorno not merely as a religious founder or devotional figure, but as a protagonist of modern Italian history. Through her experience, the book reflects on the relationship between religion and modernity, the public role of women within the Church, the rise of social Catholicism, and the transformation of charity into an organized structure of assistance and education.
