Aristotle distinguishes ethics and mathematics in several passages of the "Nichomachea Ethics". On the other hand, he talks in other passages of the same work of ethical reasoning in terms of "calculation". It is suggested that he has in mind archaic mathematical patterns of calculation, which become for him interesting in the field of practical sciences thanks to their flexibility and approximation.
