This essay is dedicated to the site-specific works created in the garden of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo (Como) by the artist Maria Dompè (Roma 1959). From Alan Sonfist’s landscape works to the theories of the French philosopher Gilles Clément, this essay demonstrates the artist-gardener promotes a form of artistic expression that unites gardening, sculpture, and philosophy. In his project "Le jardin planétaire. Réconcilier l’homme et la nature", Clément, drawing on the writings of philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari—which advocate for a multi-level ecology encompassing environmental, mental, and social dimensions—has called for the transformation of the citizen of the new millennium into a gardener who can “nurture” rather than “harm the earth.”
