The essay analyzes enumeration as a rhetorical figure and a cognitive tool, distinguishing between "furor" (chaotic accumulation and tendency toward infinity) and "continentia" (order and selection). Drawing on historical models such as Homer and medieval encyclopedism, it shows how lists reflect different cultural paradigms and ways of understanding reality. In the twentieth century, this contrast emerges in the works of Carlo Emilio Gadda and Italo Calvino: the former adopts a chaotic enumeration that conveys the complexity of the world, while the latter proposes, also in dialogue with the Oulipo, an ordered and classificatory model. Enumeration thus becomes a tool that, between chaos and order, shapes the knowledge of reality, enabling a partial yet structured understanding of its complexity.

Abstract
Enumeration thus becomes a tool that, between chaos and order, shapes the knowledge of reality, enabling a partial yet structured understanding of its complexity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
