Through a close reading of selected passages from Propertius and Ovid, the paper shows how Latin elegiac poets develop a literary play while depicting the alternating struggles and reconciliations between lovers. The basic theme, expressed in various forms, revolves around the paradoxical notion that a peaceful relationship rests upon a latent state of conflict.
