The article examines how the pandemic accelerated long‑standing transformations within Italian society: economic stagnation, a fragile welfare system, asymmetric tertiarization, and increasing labor precariousness. These dynamics have produced a new social structure marked by a fragmented middle class, the expansion of vulnerable groups, and the emergence of hybrid categories such as the “creative class” and the “fifth estate.” Growing tensions between the “upper world” and the “lower world” call for public policies capable of mending social fractures, restoring social mobility, and strengthening the role of civil society.

Abstract
The article examines how the pandemic accelerated long‑standing transformations within Italian society: economic stagnation, a fragile welfare system, asymmetric tertiarization, and increasing labor precariousness. These dynamics have produced a new social structure marked by a fragmented middle class, the expansion of vulnerable groups, and the emergence of hybrid categories such as the “creative class” and the “fifth estate.” Growing tensions between the “upper world” and the “lower world” call for public policies capable of mending social fractures, restoring social mobility, and strengthening the role of civil society.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
