As with many other aspects of papal history, the period from the 11th-century Reformation to the 13th century played a significant role in the practice of truces. This practice, which originated in continental Europe, entered the political vocabulary of the popes with the advent of the reformist popes and enjoyed widespread success in bringing about peace in preparation for the Crusades. Through a few examples, we will show how the Roman Church, by prescribing the suspension of hostilities, was able to act as an impartial arbiter, thus gaining a sort of monopoly (at least in theory) over the regulation of conflicts.

Abstract
As with many other aspects of papal history, the period from the 11th-century Reformation to the 13th century played a significant role in the practice of truces. This practice, which originated in continental Europe, entered the political vocabulary of the popes with the advent of the reformist popes and enjoyed widespread success in bringing about peace in preparation for the Crusades. Through a few examples, we will show how the Roman Church, by prescribing the suspension of hostilities, was able to act as an impartial arbiter, thus gaining a sort of monopoly (at least in theory) over the regulation of conflicts.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
