The paper aims first to underline the importance of the relation between data and theory, then to envisage new tendencies against traditional trends on this topic in linguistic research. Applying is different from explicating. Anyway persuasive arguments are introduced in order not to dwell upon armchair philosophy as well as armchair linguistics.
