Based primarily on Vatican archival sources, this essay sheds light on the arduous construction of a modus vivendi between the state and the Catholic Church in post-revolutionary Mexico, highlighting the opportunities and risks of a “Nicodemic” relationship such as that established between the Mexican regime and the local ecclesiastical hierarchy.
