One of the most well-known themes in the works of both Quevedo and del Valle y Caviedes is the parody of doctors and their unorthodox methods, which often caused more harm than good to their unfortunate patients. Linked to this theme are various illnesses that are used metaphorically, especially in Quevedo’s moral treatises, beyond their physical and clinical aspects. This study analyses how both authors describe and employ illness throughout their works, considering both its effects on the body and its metaphorical function in moral reflections.
