Digitalization, the development of the Internet, market deregulation, and media convergence have all contributed to the rise of a small number of global corporations (the Big Five), which provide the digital infrastructures on which sectoral platforms (such as Netflix, Airbnb, and Uber) rely. The chapter explores the structural features of platforms — data, algorithms, interfaces, ownership status, business models, and terms of use — highlighting their influence on user experience and on the balance of power within the media economy. Platforms operate in multi-sided markets, with business models based on data collection and monetization, user profiling, and the sale of advertising space or personalized services. The final section emphasizes the main continuities (such as ownership concentration and the winner-takes-all model) and discontinuities (datafication, commodification, and algorithmic content selection) compared to the past.
Il capitolo illustra l’impatto della digitalizzazione e della platformization sull’economia dei media. Le piattaforme digitali risultano centrali nell’esperienza quotidiana degli utenti, ridefinendo le pratiche di consumo e i modelli di business e agendo come nuovi intermediari tra produttori, consumatori e istituzioni. La digitalizzazione, lo sviluppo della rete Internet, la deregolamentazione dei mercati e la convergenza mediale hanno favorito l’ascesa di un ristretto numero di imprese globali (le Big Five), che forniscono le infrastrutture digitali su cui si appoggiano le piattaforme di settore (come Netflix, Airbnb, Uber). Il capitolo approfondisce le caratteristiche strutturali delle piattaforme (dati, algoritmi, interfacce, status proprietario, modelli di business, termini di utilizzo), mostrandone l’influenza sull’esperienza degli utenti e sui rapporti di forza nell’economia dei media. Le piattaforme si inseriscono infatti in mercati multi-sided, con modelli di business fondati sulla raccolta e valorizzazione dei dati, sulla profilazione degli utenti e sulla vendita di spazi pubblicitari o servizi personalizzati. Nella parte finale si evidenziano le principali continuità (come la concentrazione proprietaria e il modello winner-takes-all) e le discontinuità (datificazione, mercificazione, selezione algoritmica dei contenuti) rispetto al passato.
