This essay reflects on how the cultural biases of nineteenth-century European doctors influenced the appropriation of indigenous knowledge about medicinal plants. The text analyzed is the travel diary Viaje a Nueva Granada (1869) by the French physician Charles Saffray. His descriptions of the flora are representative examples of the validation processes that come into play in the construction of scientific discourse on the interpretation of traditional indigenous medicine.
