This study provides an initial analysis of La maraca embrujada por jibaná, anovel by Manuel Zapata Olivella. The novel describes the tensions between empiricaland scientific medicine in Colombia’s Chocó region. The study aims to define howZapata Olivella highlights cooperation and empathy – which he believes are necessary toovercome the stigma imposed on the belief systems of indigenous and Afro-descendantcommunities in Colombia – by working this opposition.
