The book presents a series of reasons why Irenaeus of Lyons played an important role in defining the canon and the concept of heresy in the second half of the second century AD. In this way, Irenaeus countered the Christologies proposed by the Gnostics.

Viene presentata la serie delle motivazioni per cui Ireneo di Lione ebbe un ruolo importante nel processo di definizione del canone e del concetto di eresia nella seconda metà del II secolo dopo Cristo. In questo modo Ireneo ha contrastato le cristologie proposte dagli gnostici.
