The Living Words of Augustine and Medieval Philosophy brings together eight thematic lessons devoted to key aspects of the thought of Augustine of Hippo and the broader medieval philosophical tradition. Originally developed within the context of Romanae Disputationes—a national philosophy competition for secondary school students—the volume inaugurates the Sumphilosophein series, which seeks to combine scholarly rigor with pedagogical effectiveness by promoting a critical, argumentative, and dialogical approach to philosophy, understood not as the passive transmission of content but as a living exercise of thought. The lessons address, through both systematic analysis and formative engagement, central themes in Augustinian and medieval reflection: affections and interpersonal bonds as foundational structures of human experience; beauty as a path to truth and a manifestation of ontological order; the body as both limit and potential for transfiguration; desire as a fundamental anthropological dynamic; language as mediation between interiority and communication; reality as an intelligible and participatory order; time as an existential enigma; and values as expressions of the objectivity of the good. Each chapter offers a fertile intersection between historical insight and theoretical elaboration, integrating conceptual analysis with existential questioning. This volume thus serves as both a tool for deepening philosophical understanding and a guide for educational orientation, aimed especially at students and teachers. It invites readers to renew their engagement with the philosophical tradition and to cultivate a critical awareness capable of addressing the complexity of reality. In this sense, Augustinian and medieval thought emerge as a fertile resource for understanding the human condition, educating freedom, and interrogating the present through the enduring questions of philosophy.
