The essay is the preliminary result of a research project. It is based on the digitalisation of the 1946 urban census of Milan. The data obtained from this source are compared with what is known from the literature. The essay focuses in particular on the main lines of the city's development during the Podestà administration (1926-1945). The aim is to verify the ability of the census to shed light on the economic and social structure of the various districts of the city.
