Nowadays Artificial Intelligence (AI) can bring numerous benefits to human life. The present paper outlines legal and ethical grounds to trust AI information in decision-making processes within the context of armed conflicts. By reconstructing the legal framework, with a special attention on the development and use of Autonomous Weapon Systems, it calls for regulation on the matter focusing on the level of human control necessary to trust AI decision-making processes. Moreover, the Metaverse will be examined, having regard to the possible uses of it in the military arena and to the concept of the “battleverse” and cognitive warfare.

Abstract

Nowadays Artificial Intelligence (AI) can bring numerous benefits to human life. The present paper outlines legal and ethical grounds to trust AI information in decision-making processes within the context of armed conflicts. By reconstructing the legal framework, with a special attention on the development and use of Autonomous Weapon Systems, it calls for regulation on the matter focusing on the level of human control necessary to trust AI decision-making processes. Moreover, the Metaverse will be examined, having regard to the possible uses of it in the military arena and to the concept of the “battleverse” and cognitive warfare.
