Opere a sineddoche. Enciclopedismo e letteratura dal postmoderno a oggi

In the age of complexity, encyclopedic literature has been forced to renegotiate its ability to grasp reality. Men of letters have updated the “challenge to the labyrinth” launched by Calvino, modeling their narratives on two distinct patterns: the rhizome, which proliferates, giving rise to maximalist novels and global novels; and the mycelium, whose controlled growth becomes a metaphor for an alternative practice, based on the use of a part in function of the whole. Hence the critical proposal of the volume, which identifies in the Italian panorama of the last fifty years a flowering of “synecdote works”, highlighting the paradigm that lies behind the inventions of even distant authors: from Umberto Eco to Michele Mari and Eugenio Baroncelli, from Gianni Celati to Ugo Cornia, from Juan Rodolfo Wilcock to Giuseppe Pederiali and Stefano Benni.

Nell’epoca della complessità, la letteratura enciclopedica è stata costretta a rinegoziare la propria capacità di presa sul reale. I letterati hanno aggiornato la “sfida al labirinto” lanciata da Calvino, modellando le proprie narrazioni su due pattern ben distinti: il rizoma, che prolifera, dando origine a romanzi massimalisti e global novels; e il micelio, la cui crescita controllata si fa metafora di una prassi alternativa, basata sull’utilizzo di una parte in funzione del tutto. Da qui la proposta critica del volume, che identifica nel panorama italiano degli ultimi cinquant’anni una fioritura di «opere a sineddoche», mettendo in rilievo il paradigma che sta dietro alle invenzioni di autori anche lontani: da Umberto Eco a Michele Mari ed Eugenio Baroncelli, da Gianni Celati a Ugo Cornia, da Juan Rodolfo Wilcock a Giuseppe Pederiali e Stefano Benni.
