This volume collects contributions appeared over a period of fifteen years in various publications, aimed at clarifying the controversial origins and first century of the Order of the Humiliati. Founded on the initiative of a group of lay people and religious figures, the religious group was only partially condemned as heretical by Lucius III, while Innocent III approved its rules in 1201 and divided it into three different orders, one of which was reserved for lay people and married couples. The examination of papal documentation in particular has allowed for a re-evaluation of the positions of 20th-century historiography and, together with the evaluation of the copious but scattered notarial documentation, has made it possible to redefine the institutional profile and tasks of the various Orders in the context of society and the local Churches, especially in north-western Italy.

Abstract
This volume collects contributions appeared over a period of fifteen years in various publications, aimed at clarifying the controversial origins and first century of the Order of the Humiliati. Founded on the initiative of a group of lay people and religious figures, the religious group was only partially condemned as heretical by Lucius III, while Innocent III approved its rules in 1201 and divided it into three different orders, one of which was reserved for lay people and married couples. The examination of papal documentation in particular has allowed for a re-evaluation of the positions of 20th-century historiography and, together with the evaluation of the copious but scattered notarial documentation, has made it possible to redefine the institutional profile and tasks of the various Orders in the context of society and the local Churches, especially in north-western Italy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
